Fluid Management in Term Neonates, Children & Young People (Term Birth - 16th Birthday)

Purpose

To enhance the knowledge and skills of the Registered Nurse (RN), in the management and care of the child (Birth -16 years), requiring fluid management in hospital.

Learning Outcomes

• Outline nursing responsibilities and accountability in ensuring safe fluid management to children/young people, incorporating duty of candour, human factors, effective communication/ leadership and record keeping.
• Discuss the importance of maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance in children, appreciating the relevance of timely blood investigations in safe fluid management to children/young people.
• Explain safe fluid replacement in children/young people adhering to DoH guidance (Feb 2017) and recommendations from Hyponatraemia Inquiry (IIHRD, 2018).
• Demonstrate how to correctly calculate fluid requirements and accurately record these.
