Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) Sampling in Adults

Purpose

To provide participants with the knowledge and skills to perform radial arterial blood sampling.

Learning Outcomes

• Outline the anatomy and physiology of the radial artery.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the Allen/Modified Allen Test and its role in clinical decision making.
• Demonstrate the procedure for taking an arterial blood sample from the radial artery and post procedure care, using a wrist simulator.
• Discuss the potential complications of arterial blood gas sampling.

Audience

Registered Adult Nurse and Respiratory Physiotherapist. (Not suitable for paediatric nurses)

You must bring your own ABG sampling syringes.

Method

Face to face delivery

Lecture, Discussion and Simulated Practice.

Supervised Practice

Following this theoretical component the participant must engage with an appropriate skilled practitioner in his/her clinical area, to further develop a greater knowledge and understanding of this person-centred care activity. This will involve supervised practice which should be completed within 12 weeks to consolidate learning and application to practice. It is the responsibility of the individual participant to complete this activity and to confirm completion with his/her line manager.
