Purpose

To review best practice guidelines in relation to administering intramuscular (IM) injections

Learning Outcomes

• Explain why this route is used for administration of medications
• Identify the sites for IM injections and rationale for site selection
• Describe how to minimise complications by utilising evidence base practice in selection of equipment, skin preparation and infection control
• Outline and demonstrate via simulated practice the safe administration of IM injections and your role in assessment, monitoring and recording of treatment
