Intravenous Administration of Medicines (Children)


Purpose

To build on knowledge and skills, to safely undertake the administration of intravenous drugs to children via peripheral or central venous catheters

Learning Outcomes
  • Explain the legal and professional implications for registrants administering intravenous drugs to children
  • Explore the fundamental principles involved in the safe preparation and administration of intravenous medicines, including pharmacological principles & ANTT
  • Identify how human factors contribute to medicine errors, reflecting on practice in your locality, and any changes that could reduce risk.
  • Review your knowledge and accuracy in drug calculations and identify any future learning needs.
  • Review how you recognise and respond to emergencies resulting from administering intravenous medicines
Audience

Registered Nurses, Midwives, Public Health Nurses and Health Visitors 

 

Method

Face to Face delivery

Lecture, video, quiz, and discussion 

 

Supervised Practice

Following this theoretical component the participant must engage with an appropriate skilled practitioner in his/her clinical area, to further develop a greater knowledge and understanding of this person-centred care activity. This will involve supervised practice which should be completed within 12 weeks to consolidate learning and application to practice. It is the responsibility of the individual participant to complete this activity and to confirm completion with his/her line manager,
