Central Venous Access Devices (Children)

Purpose

To build on participants knowledge and skills to develop a high standard of care for children and young people with an indwelling central venous access device (CVAD).

Learning Outcomes

• Explain anatomy & physiology of the venous system related to central venous access devices (CVAD)
• Outline the commonly used devices in children in N Ireland (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter, PICC; Hickman/Broviac; Implanted Ports) their characteristics and application to practice.
• Discuss the underpinning principles of care when a child has a CVAD, potential complications and appropriate management
• Review appropriate nursing management of Central Venous Access Devices in children using multimedia.
• Using an online quiz, reflect on your understanding of risks, & appropriate management of each CVAD

Registered Nurses, Paramedics, Therapeutic Radiographers

Method

Face to Face delivery

 

Supervised Practice

Following this theoretical component the participant must engage with an appropriate skilled practitioner in his/her clinical area, to further develop a greater knowledge and understanding of this person-centred care activity. This will involve supervised practice which should be completed within 12 weeks to consolidate learning and application to practice. It is the responsibility of the individual participant to complete this activity and to confirm completion with his/her line manager
