Enteral Feeding in Babies, Children & Young People


Purpose

To facilitate safe and effective, person centred enteral feeding to a baby, child or young person using Nasogastric, Gastrostomy (PEG and Button) and Jejunostomy Tubes.

Learning Outcomes
  • Review legal and professional implications in enteral feeding, including consent, delegating and teaching enteral feeding to another
  • Outline relevant anatomy and physiologyin digestion and the impact of an enteral device on safe feeding, administration of medicines,  parental confidence, child development and comfort
  • Identify indicators for moving to enteral feeding and factors that influence tube choice.
  • Observe safe practice in nasogastric and gastrostomy replacement using simulation
  • Reflect on your understanding of risks and appropriate management of each tube including difficulties in confirming tube placement and dislodgement

Registered Nurses, Dietitians, Diagnostic Radiographers and Senior Nursing Assistants

Method

Face to face delivery

Lecture, discussion, video and simulation

Supervised Practice

Following this theoretical component the participant must engage with an appropriate skilled practitioner in his/her clinical area, to further develop a greater knowledge and understanding of this person-centred care activity. This will involve supervised practice which should be completed within 12 weeks to consolidate learning and application to practice. It is the responsibility of the individual participant to complete this activity and to confirm completion with his/her line manager.
