Tracheostomy Care in Children


Purpose

To facilitate evidence based practice in delivering safe & effective care to babies, children and young people with a tracheostomy.

Learning Outcomes
  • Explain both legal and professional implications in undertaking tracheostomy care, including delegation of this care to another and the role of inter-professional teams across sectors in developing safe and effective patient and family centered care when preparing for transfer of care/ discharge
  • Review the anatomy & physiology of the airway and indicators for tracheostomy; review the impact of a tracheostomy tube on respiratory and communication function; risks & appropriate management.
  • Outline the commonly used tracheostomy tubes for Children in Northern Ireland, their characteristics and application.
  • Use multimedia and simulated practice to review safe practice in tracheal suctioning; tracheostomy tube change and tape tying; attaching/removing Heat moisture exchanger; cleaning and replacing inner cannula where applicable.
  • Reflect on your understanding of safe tracheostomy care, potential risks & appropriate management.
Audience

Registered Nurses, Senior Nursing Assistants, Physiotherapists, Speech and Language Therapists

Method

Face to face delivery

Lecture, discussion, video and simulation.

Supervised Practice

Following this theoretical component the participant must engage with an appropriate skilled practitioner in their clinical area to further develop a greater knowledge and understanding of this person-centred care activity. This will involve supervised practice which should be completed within12 weeks to consolidate learning and application to practice. It is the responsibility of the individual participant to complete this activity and to confirm completion with their line manager.
