Digital Rectal Interventions


Purpose

To facilitate participants to develop knowledge and skills in the care and management of a patient requiring Digital Rectal Examination, Digital Rectal Stimulation and Digital Removal of Faeces.

Learning Outcomes
  • Discuss the relevant legal and professional issues
  • Review lower bowel function, dysfunction and management including autonomic dysreflexia.
  • Observe simulated procedures for digital rectal examination, removal of faeces and rectal stimulation
  • Participate in stimulated practice
Audience

Registered Adult Nurses and Midwives

Method

Face to face delivery

Supervised Practice

Following this theoretical component the participant must engage with an appropriate skilled practitioner in his/her clinical area, to further develop a greater knowledge and understanding of this person-centred care activity. This will involve observed & supervised practice which should be completed within 12 weeks to consolidate learning and application to practice. It is the responsibility of the individual participant to complete this activity and to confirm completion with his/her line manager.
