Venepuncture in Children and Young People


Purpose

To facilitate participants to develop the necessary knowledge to perform venepuncture safely and effectively in children and young people.

Learning Outcomes
  • Explain the legal and professional implications of venepuncture
  • Discuss the role of the nurse in minimising pain, anxiety & distress in the child and their family
  • Review the venous system, exploring criteria for choosing a vein and minimising the risk of potential complications
  • Explain device choice giving consideration to infection control principles and needle safety
  • Reflect on the video demonstration of venepuncture skill in preparation for supervised practice
Audience

Registered Nurses, Senior Nursing Assistants

Method

Face to face delivery

Supervised Practice

Following this theoretical component the participant must engage with an appropriate skilled practitioner in his/her clinical area, to further develop a greater knowledge and understanding of this person-centred care activity. This will involve supervised practice which should be completed within 12 weeks to consolidate learning and application to practice. It is the responsibility of the individual participant to complete this activity and to confirm completion with his/her line manager.
