Purpose

To augment the health care professionals communication skills to enhance the therapeutic relationship with service users and their significant others in the healthcare setting.

Learning Outcomes
  • Reflect on the importance of effective communication in the healthcare setting
  • Explore the barriers and behaviours which promote and those which prevent effective communication.
  • Identify the essential communication skills required to enhance the therapeutic relationship.
  • Apply communication skills and appropriate strategies to issues such as breaking bad news, collusion, managing anger and denial to promote person-centred communication with patients  and significant others.
  • Explore with participants the importance of self-care and how we debrief.
  • Reflect on practice and develop a personal action plan to enhance your therapeutic relationships.
