Physical Healthcare Needs for a Person With Mental Illness


Purpose

To increase the knowledge and skills of the registered nurse with regard to the physical health care needs of service users with a mental illness.

Learning Outcomes
  • Discuss the strategic drivers that underpin the delivery of person-centred care of individuals with mental health disorders and a physical health condition.
  • Reflect on the most recent evidence base regarding medical co-morbidity in people with a mental illness.
  • Develop an understanding of the primary risk factors for poor physical health and increased risk of mortality.
  • Recognise and understand the key signs and symptoms of common physical health problems such as diabetes, respiratory, cardiovascular disease, hyponatraemia and sepsis.
  • Discuss the importance of Duty of Candour when providing care for an individual with mental and physical health conditions.
  • Explore avenues of support for people with mental illness in the management of their long term chronic physical conditions.
Audience

All Registered Nurses.

Consideration will be given to Senior Nursing Assistants working in Mental Health settings.

Face-to-face or online delivery

For programmes delivered online you must join using a device which has a functioning camera and microphone.
