Perineal Repair: Management of


Purpose

To enhance midwives’ knowledge about prevention of perineal damage and how to effectively assess and repair perineal trauma.

Learning Outcomes
  • To identify key musculature and functions of the pelvic floor and their importance during birth
  • To understand short and long term morbidity issues associated with perineal trauma
  • To analyse evidence based midwifery strategies that minimise perineal trauma (antenatal and intranatal)
  • To understand when and how to perform an episiotomy
  • To identify degrees of trauma and the midwifery scope of practice
  • To understand the principles of safe,  evidence-based perineal repair
  • To discuss evidence-based advice for women regarding postpartum care of perineal trauma

Method

Online delivery and discussion

To complete this programme online you must join using a device which has a functioning camera and microphone.

Supervised Practice

Following this theoretical component the participant must engage with an appropriate skilled practitioner in his/her clinical area, to further develop a greater knowledge and understanding of this person-centred care activity. This will involve supervised practice which should be completed to consolidate learning and application to practice. It is the responsibility of the individual participant to complete this activity and to confirm completion with his/her line manager.
