Purpose

To provide an overview of the role of pharmacology in the provision of person centred care for people presenting with mental illness.

Learning Outcomes
  • Recognise the importance of pharmacology in delivering effective person centred care.
  • Explore the pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics and pharmacotherapeutics associated with medicines prescribed for mental illness.
  • Describe the role of the nurse pertaining to patient advocacy regarding the purpose, efficacy and side effects of medicines prescribed for mental illness
  • Consider the theoretical knowledge for application in daily practice.
