Head and Neck Cancer Course (4 days)

Purpose

The aim of this 4 day course is to raise participants' awareness and knowledge of the surgical and non-surgical treatments and complex issues surrounding the management of patients with head and neck cancer. Participants will gain an insight into the necessary multiprofessional roles to facilitate optimal care for this client group.

Learning Outcomes

• Develop an understanding of the scientific basis for the management of  patients with head and neck cancer
• Discuss the related symptoms and therapeutic interventions in the management and care of patients with head and neck cancer
• Consider the professional and ethical issues that are relevant to the management of patients with head and neck cancer
• Discuss a range of current research that is pertinent to this specialist field
• Discuss how the principles of palliative care may be applied to patient assessment and the planning, implementation and evaluation of appropriate care and management of patients with head and neck cancer
• Reflect on the skills associated with therapeutic interventions in the management of emergencies, pain and the relief of other symptoms
• Reflect on the use of therapeutic communication skills in the care of the patient and their family
• Appreciate the significance of the psychological, social, spiritual and sexual aspects of care for the patient and their family
• Discuss the importance of  multidisciplinary team collaboration in the care and management of patients with head and neck cancer.
