Mental Health and Mental Illness: exploring the fundamentals


Purpose

To increase knowledge and understanding of mental health and mental illness in order to enhance person-centred practice.

Learning Outcomes
  • Appraise the wider concepts of mental health and ill health, with reference to the Northern Ireland context
  • Discuss the continuum of mental health and challenge common-held stigmatising beliefs about mental illness
  • Identify the signs and symptoms of common mental health conditions
  • Appreciate the significance of connection and a compassionate approach towards people who experience suicidal ideation or thoughts of self-harm
  • Describe and engage the fundamental components of effective communication in building and maintaining the therapeutic relationship and therapeutic use of self
  • Use a public health approach to promote mental wellbeing, prevent future mental health problems and work within a recovery framework with those who live with mental illness
