Specific Therapeutic Positioning and Manual Handling for People with Dementia


Purpose

Purpose/Aim: To improve knowledge in relation to paratonia and management of this in relation to sensory issues for people with dementia.

Learning Outcomes

An in-depth understanding of:

  • How brain function in dementia can lead to sensory motor issues
  • How sensory motor issues present as paratonia at all stages of the dementia journey.
  • To understand how decline in body positioning is linked to a decline in sensorimotor integration in people with dementia and those with a dual diagnosis of learning disability and dementia.
  • To provide clinicians with practical tools to treat and reduce sensory issues and increased tone in people with dementia and those with a dual diagnosis of learning disability and dementia.To increase clinician’s knowledge and skills in the prevention of fixed postures and pressure damage in people with dementia and those with a dual diagnosis of learning disability and dementia.
  • Clinicians will learn to apply dynamic positioning systems to avoid the formation of contractures and postural deviation
Audience

Occupational Therapists working in specialist Dementia Services and Specialist Learning Disability services, at Band 6 & 7
