Vital Signs - Undertaking and Recording (Adult)


Purpose

To enable participants to develop the necessary knowledge and skills to safely undertake, record and report the vital signs of an adult; Respirations, Pulse Oximetry, Pulse, Blood Pressure, Temperature, and Level of Consciousness (ACVPU).

Learning Outcomes
  • Discussed the legal and professional issues associated with undertaking vital signs
  • Considered the physical and psychological comfort of the patient
  • Identified the normal & abnormal ranges of vital signs & accurately record using the national early warning scoring system (NEWS2)
  • Recognised the importance of prompt reporting
  • Practiced vital signs in a simulated environment
  • Clarified the competency requirements to be achieved in their clinical areas.
Audience

Senior Nursing Assistant ( band 3) , Maternity Support Worker ( band 3) and Allied Health Professionals following management approval.

Method

Face to face delivery

Discussion, lecture, videos, simulated practice & scenarios

Supervised Practice

Following this theoretical component the participant must engage with an appropriate skilled practitioner in his/her clinical area, to further develop a greater knowledge and understanding of this person-centred care activity. This will involve supervised practice which should be completed within 12  weeks to consolidate learning and application to practice. It is the responsibility of the individual participant to complete this activity and to confirm completion with his/her line manager
