Paediatric Upper Limb Orthosis for Children with Neurological Impairments


Purpose

To develop Paediatric Occupational Therapists knowledge and skills of upper limb splinting for children with abnormal tone.

Learning Outcomes
  • To consider the benefits of night wrist hand orthosis ,providing a prolonged low load stretch, post use of Botulinum toxin –A as an adjunct to Paediatric Upper limb rehabilitation.
  • Understand the risks children with cerebral palsy have of developing musculoskeletal problems and the impact of this on function and participation.
  • Be able to carry out upper limb assessment on a child with cerebral palsy encompassing range of motion measures and consideration of functional assessment
  • To increase confidence in choice of appropriate splinting materials and equipment.
  • To improve knowledge re fabrication of thermoplastic night wrist hand orthosis and thumb splints.
  • To consider use of functional day splints and lycra to enhance function
  • Face to face case studies with practical demonstration of splinting
