Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) 0-18 years: Exploring ASD - Assessment & Intervention within Occupational Therapy


Purpose

This course will provide an overview of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in children 0-18 years including implications for Occupational Therapy assessment and intervention enabling participants to apply theory and practice to case studies.

Learning Outcomes
  • Identify epidemiology of ASD and reference the aetiology.
  • Discuss the Autistic experience of social communication, social interaction and engagement with everyday activities and environments.
  • Describe the responses to sensory stimuli and the differences with gross and fine motor which impact on engaging in everyday activities.
  • Identify the Occupational Therapy assessment process including tools/measures used with Autistic children.
  • Explore practical strategies including using ASD specific strategies; visual aids/structure etc. to help enhance occupational performance across environments such as school and home
Audience

Primarily Band 5 & 6 Paediatric Occupational Therapists who work with autistic children/young people within the community, core, hospital, nursery, residential, or school settings. To include also those Band 7’s new to this specialist area.

Live virtual sessions across 2 days

Link on Neurodiversity and the Autistic experience will be sent in advance of attending; this is a pre-requisite to the course and must be completed.

Live virtual sessions across 2 days exploring the Occupational Therapy assessment and intervention process when working with autistic children/young people; with presenter facilitation and group discussion.

Please have access to a camera and sound on laptop/PC to engage with the virtual sessions.
