Systematic Examination of the Newborn (SEN) Update


Purpose

To consolidate and update your knowledge and skills in relation to performing examination of the newborn in line with the Newborn and Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) guidelines.

Learning Outcomes
  • Review the midwife’s role as examiner within the Newborn and Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) screening programme guidelines. 
  • Outline the relationship between antenatal and intrapartum events that may impact on newborn health status.   
  • Discuss the preparation needed for the examination and the key principles.   
  • Review effective and informed decision making including communicating with parents and relevant professionals.
