Purpose
To develop Paediatric Occupational Therapists knowledge and skills in the assessment and treatment of upper limb with children with CP/neurological impairment (MACS level 1-3)
Learning Outcomes
Characteristics and prevalence of unilateral CP and effect on hand use and function
- Classification of manual ability; Medical and therapeutic approaches to upper limb management in children with neurological conditions. Evidence based practice review and interpretation; UL contracture development in children with CP; Partnership working to improve activity and participation
Spasticity/dystonia, medical /therapy, neural plasticity-medical management
- Medical management; Botulinum Toxin and Occupational Therapy; Assessment for upper limb Botulinum Toxin injection
Anatomy and Neuro orthopaedic examination of the upper limb
- Applied UL anatomy in relation to function, activity /participation achieving functional goals.
Appreciate the clinical reasoning when differentiating between therapeutic modalities
- Explore and consider options for implementing evidence based practice interventions; Upper Limb Treatment Tool/ Prevention Pathway - transitions throughout childhood; Early diagnosis and intervention
UL development in the first year of life
- Assessment of the UL and functional hand use in bimanual hand performance; Motor learning
Distributed models of care
- Task specific training in infants; Modified constraint induced movement therapy; Bimanual therapy, Goal directed therapy; Participation
Parental support, coaching and education
- Home therapy programmes, partnership working, managing expectations
Objective evaluation of outcomes of intervention
- Goal setting and treatment planning, Multidisciplinary team
Audience
For Occupational Therapists, band 6 and above, working with children with Hemiplegia MACS Level 1-3
