Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)


Purpose

To provide healthcare professionals with the knowledge and confidence to recognise, respond to and work to prevent FGM within Northern Ireland. 

Learning Outcomes
  • Define FGM and identify the different types.
  • Understand the cultural, social and religious contexts in which FGM is practised.
  • Describe the short and long term complications of FGM.
  • Recognise signs that a female may be at risk of, or affected by FGM.
  • Explain the legal and professional duties with regards to FGM.
  • Demonstrate how to respond sensitively to FGM including documentation, sharing information and confidentiality.
  • Discuss how to approach sensitive conversations with individuals and communities  to prevent FGM and support those affected.
