Perineal Repair: Theory for Midwifery Practice


Purpose

To enhance midwives’ knowledge about prevention of perineal damage and how to effectively assess and repair perineal trauma.

Learning Outcomes

• Identify key musculature and functions of the pelvic floor and their importance during birth

• Understand the short and long term morbidity issues associated with perineal trauma

• Analyse evidence based midwifery strategies that minimise perineal trauma (antenatal and intranatal)

• Discuss when and how to perform an episiotomy

• Identify degrees of trauma and the principles of safe, evidence-based perineal repair

• Reflect on the evidence-based advice for women regarding postpartum care of perineal trauma
