Diabetes Competency - Consolidating dietetic practice in Diabetes (previously entry level/level 2 competency)


Purpose

To consolidate practice in the nutritional management of diabetes and support the development of entry-level competencies in clinical diabetes care and patient education (in line with the Dietetic Competency Framework, June 2021).

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this programme, participants will be able to:

  • Summarise current UK diabetes dietary guidelines and their implications for practice
  • Explain the role and structure of diabetes education programmes and identify appropriate referral pathways
  • Differentiate and describe oral hypoglycaemic agents, insulin, and other diabetes therapies within NI prescribing practices
  • Apply knowledge of carbohydrate metabolism, glycaemic index (GI), and glycaemic load (GL) to provide tailored dietary advice
  • Analyse social and emotional factors influencing adherence to diet and lifestyle changes in people with diabetes
  • Apply theoretical knowledge to interpret and manage a range of clinical case scenarios
  • Evaluate personal clinical practice and formulate strategies to enhance knowledge and skills in diabetes care
  • Critically reflect on and interpret the influence of dietetic competencies on NI access criteria and care pathway implementation across settings
Audience

Dietitians at Band 5/6 and above with limited DM experience
