Evidenced based upper limb training after stroke

Purpose

This workshop aims to equip therapists with the knowledge and skills to optimise upper limb recovery following stroke by minimising impairment and enhancing functional participation. Grounded in contemporary movement science and motor relearning principles, the programme integrates current best evidence with over three decades of international delivery to support effective, evidence-informed rehabilitation practice.

Learning Outcomes
  • Analyse normal upper limb movement in reach and manipulation, and identify deviations and compensatory strategies in stroke survivors.
  • Differentiate and explain the mechanisms underpinning muscle overactivity, spasticity, stiffness, and muscle length changes, and their impact on movement and recovery.
  • Apply evidence-informed strategies to minimise compensations and secondary complications during upper limb rehabilitation.
  • Plan, and evaluate upper limb assessment and treatment sessions using motor learning principles and task-specific practice.
  • Adapt rehabilitation approaches by analysing modifiable factors that influence motor learning to optimise client engagement and practice intensity.
  • Demonstrate and critically appraise the use of adjunctive interventions (e.g. electrical stimulation, CIMT, mental practice, mirror therapy) to support upper limb recover
