Movement analysis of people with neurological conditions - Gait

Purpose

To introduce participants to biomechanical gait analysis in the assessment and treatment of adults with neurological conditions. Concentrating on observation, comparison to the known normal and developing possible reasons as to the causes of the altered gait, which can then be tested and trained

Learning Outcomes

• To revise the known normal gait cycle
• To enhance skills of observation and analysis of adults with a neurological condition
• To link the evidence base with clinical practice

By the end of the programme, participants should be able to:

• Describe normal gait using biomechanical terminology both kinematics (joint movements/ what is observed) and kinetics (muscle action and forces – causes of what we see)
• Identify key components of gait through observation and generate ideas as to potential causes for any missing or abnormal components
• Demonstrate testing skills to confirm differential diagnosis
• Apply this clinical reasoning to start a gait re-education programme and for patients with neurological dysfunction
