Cognitive-Communication Disorder (CCD) across the pathway

Purpose

Develop the knowledge and skills of the SLT workforce in identifying, assessing and managing the impact of cognitive impairments on communication.

Learning Outcomes

• Increased awareness of the presence of cognitive-communication disorders (CCD) among a variety of populations and learn ways to support individuals in their unique environments
• Acknowledge the potential for CCD to co-occur alongside dysarthria or aphasia and developing enhanced skills to distinguish between cognitive and linguistic deficits
• Recognise the benefits of dynamic assessment to consider the interplay of communication with thinking skills and to explore the functional and real-life difficulties that require to be addressed.
• Use a ‘whole person’ formulation and consider the immediate and wider impact of cognitive-communication difficulties on individuals, families and friends
• Understand the value of working within a range of social contexts to support individuals.
• Develop skills around raising awareness and insight in individuals and their families/caregivers
• Negotiate meaningful goals that will directly impact quality of life and wellbeing for individuals with CCD
• Consider the value of communication partner training, group rehab opportunities and vocational rehab and be able to adopt these in clinical practice
