Diabetes Enhanced/Advanced Competency Training for Dietitians (Previously level 3 diabetes comptency)


Purpose

To enhance specialist dietetic practice in diabetes through the application of advanced clinical knowledge, supporting safe, evidence-based decision-making and effective care aligned to the Dietetic Competency Framework for Dietitians working in the area of diabetes.

Learning Outcomes
  • Evaluate the role of dietary principles in diabetes management and their interaction with oral therapies for diabetes, injectable therapies and insulin.
  • Integrate theoretical nutritional knowledge and care pathways to manage complex clinical scenarios in diabetes care.
  • Identify the role of diabetes distress in day-to-day management of diabetes.
  • Analyse the impact on glycaemic control of physical activity and develop appropriate dietary management plans.
  • Apply evidence-based nutritional management strategies for pre-conception, during pregnancy and postnatal diabetes care.
  • Interpret glucose data from diabetes technologies to support people living with diabetes to make informed decisions around diet and healthy living, and identify potential adjustments to diabetes medications.
  • Evaluate current practice and design strategies to advance personal clinical competence and service delivery.
  • Critically appraise the application of dietetic competencies within NI access criteria and justify appropriate referral decisions.
Audience

This course is designed for dietitians who have already completed the entry-level competency training. It builds on foundational knowledge to help the transition into specialist-level practice as well as advance clinical knowledge of complex diabetes management.  

Method

2 days face to face involving lectures, interactive workshops and discussion.
