Upper Limb Management of Children with CP (MACS level 1-3)

Purpose

To develop Paediatric Occupational Therapists knowledge and skills in the assessment and treatment of upper limb with children with CP/neurological impairment (MACS level 1-3)

Learning Outcomes

• Analyse the presentation of unilateral cerebral palsy, including its impact on upper limb function, participation, and risk of musculoskeletal complications.
• Apply knowledge of upper limb anatomy, development, and neuro-orthopaedic principles to perform comprehensive assessment and inform clinical decision-making.
• Evaluate medical and therapeutic management options (including Botulinum toxin, spasticity management, and therapy approaches) to select appropriate, evidence-based interventions.
• Demonstrate clinical reasoning in planning and implementing upper limb rehabilitation, including task-specific training, bimanual approaches, and early intervention strategies.
• Develop goal-directed, participation-focused intervention plans that incorporate partnership working with families, home programmes, and distributed models of care.
• Evaluate intervention effectiveness using objective outcome measures and adapt treatment plans within a multidisciplinary team context.

Audience

For Occupational Therapists, band 6 and above, working with children with Hemiplegia MACS Level 1-3
