Paediatric upper limb orthosis for children with neurological impairments

Purpose

To develop Paediatric Occupational Therapists knowledge and skills of the use and fabrication of upper limb orthosis for children with abnormal tone.

Learning Outcomes

• Evaluate the therapeutic benefits of night wrist–hand orthoses in providing prolonged low-load stretch following Botulinum toxin–A, as an adjunct to paediatric upper limb rehabilitation.
• Explain the risks of musculoskeletal complications in children with cerebral palsy and analyse their impact on function and participation.
• Perform a comprehensive upper limb assessment for a child with cerebral palsy, including measuring range of motion and appraising functional ability.
• Select appropriate splinting materials and equipment with increased confidence, based on clinical reasoning and patient need.
• Demonstrate the fabrication of thermoplastic night wrist–hand orthoses and thumb splints.
• Analyse the role of functional day splints and Lycra garments in enhancing upper limb function.
• Apply clinical knowledge through face-to-face case studies and demonstrate practical splinting techniques
