Leg Ulcer: Fundamentals of Assessment & Management (2 days)

Purpose

To enable participants to develop their assessment and management skills of those patients with lower limb ulceration. 

Learning Outcomes

• reviewed the epidemiology and pathophysiology of lower limb ulceration,
• discussed the vascular system of the lower limb and venous return,
• knowledge of how to carry out a holistic assessment of the person living with lower limb ulceration including use of a Doppler assessment which underpins their care and management,
• knowledge of how to critically apply the outcomes of assessment including Doppler APBI to the development of a person centred care plan,
• consolidated their understanding and practice of lower limb assessment including use of hand held Doppler and participation of same (Day 2),
• participated in the safe and effective application of bandaging and other forms of compression (Day 2),
• the ability to explore the management of complex leg ulceration and the use of wound management products.

Audience

Registered ADULT Nurses . Particularly those working with people with leg ulcers in the community setting.  Must have access to a hand held DOPPLER ultrasound in your work setting.

Method

Blended : Online on Day 1 and Face to Face on Day 2.  Participants must attend both days of the same course.

Supervised Practice

Following this theoretical component the participant must engage with an appropriate skilled practitioner in his/her clinical area, to further develop a greater knowledge and understanding of this person-centred care activity. This will involve supervised practice which should be completed within 12 weeks to consolidate learning and application to practice. It is the responsibility of the individual participant to complete this activity and to confirm completion with his/her line manager.
