Leg Ulcer: Fundamentals of Assessment & Management (2 days)

Purpose

To enable participants to develop their assessment and management skills of those patients with lower limb ulceration. 

Learning Outcomes

Day One

• Review the epidemiology, pathophysiology & characteristics of lower limb ulceration
• Gain knowledge of how to carry out a holistic assessment of lower limb ulceration including Doppler assessment and interpretation of Doppler results
• Consider the application of compression therapies and the rational for appropriate wound care management products and dressing choice
• Discuss the differential diagnosis of the lower limb

Day Two

• Consolidate your understanding and practice of lower limb assessment including use of hand-held Doppler and participation of same
• Participate in the safe and effective application of bandaging and other forms of compression

 

Audience

Registered ADULT Nurses . Particularly those working with people with leg ulcers in the community setting.  Must have access to a hand held DOPPLER ultrasound in your work setting.

Method

Blended : Online on Day 1 and Face to Face on Day 2.  Participants must attend both days of the same course.

Supervised Practice

Following this theoretical component the participant must engage with an appropriate skilled practitioner in his/her clinical area, to further develop a greater knowledge and understanding of this person-centred care activity. This will involve supervised practice which should be completed within 12 weeks to consolidate learning and application to practice. It is the responsibility of the individual participant to complete this activity and to confirm completion with his/her line manager.
